Abstract: »We now know more than a little about the traumatic consequences of war rapes for the survivors. There is however another problem that has been given scant attention so far. A by no means insignificant number of women who have experienced sexual violence become pregnant and give birth to children fathered by rapists. Little research has yet been done on the consequences for these mothers and their children, and there are few reports about the fate they have undergone. The present article describes the case history of a woman who survived the genocide of the Tutsi population in Rwanda in 1994. Like Natalie S. (name changed), about 75 percent of the female genocide survivors were raped more than once. Between 5,000 and 20,000 children were born out of these rapes, among them Natalie S.’s son Samuel (name changed). Encounters and exchanges with other mothers in the same situation at the »women’s forums« organised by the Rwandan aid organisations KANYARWANDA and SEVOTA have significantly assisted Natalie S. in coming to terms with her experiences and working on the relationship with her son.« [Source: Trauma & Gewalt]
