CFP: Evil Women and Mean Girls

Book: Evil Women and Mean Girls: Critical Examinations of the Fairer Sex’s Nasty Side in History, Literature, and Popular Culture
Editors: Lynne Fallwell and Keira V. Williams
Submission deadline for abstracts: September 1, 2014
Description: »The editors invite scholars from relevant disciplines to submit original research for the proposed collection Evil Women and Mean Girls. The purpose of this edited collection is to explore gendered representations of “evil” in popular culture and history (historical era and geographical region open). Scholars often explore the relationships between gender, sex, and violence through theories of inequality, violence against women, and female victimization, but what happens when women are the perpetrators of violent or harmful behavior? In this volume, we seek to explore the following questions: How do we define “evil”? What makes evil men seem different from evil women? When women commit acts of violence or harmful behavior, how are they represented differently from men? How do perceptions of class, race, and age influence these representations? How have these representations changed over time, and why? What purposes have gendered representations of evil served in culture and history? What is the relationship between gender, punishment of evil behavior, and equality?«

CFP: Selling Sex in the City: Female Prostitution in World Cities, 1600-present

Conference: 22nd International Congriss of Historical Sciences
Place: Jinan, China
Date: August 23-29, 2015
Submission deadline for papers: June 22, 2014
Description: »The session will study prostitution as a societal phenomenon as well as prostitutes’ working and living conditions. Over time and space, these have differed greatly. Prostitution has in different times and societies both been accepted and rejected. It has been outlawed, criminalized, regulated, legalised and tolerated. Sometimes, difference has been made between brothels, streetwalking or massage parlours, at other times not. Prostitutes, pimps and madams have been (often) considered outcasts as well as (sometimes) successful entrepreneurs. Prostitutes have been locals and immigrants, and they have entered the business voluntary or forced; sold or free; to escape from, or to sustain their families. Lawmakers and abolition movements have and have not distinguished between white and non-white prostitution. Waves of toleration/regulation and of abolishment/prohibition have succeeded each other. With the rise of colonial empires and increasing globalization since the second half of the nineteenth century, both sex work itself and attitudes towards it, like regulation and abolition, have had entangled histories.«

CFP: Persons & Sexuality

Conference: 7th Global Conference: Persons & Sexualities
Place: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Date: October 20-22, 2014
Submission deadline for proposals: July 11, 2014
Description: »How do we understand the different desires and pleasures that people engage in, and by which they define who they are and how they interact with others? How do we conceive of and make sense of different sexualities beyond simple and often flawed notions of ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ or ‘deviant’ or ‘perverse’? What is at stake when we discuss sex and sexuality in the context of embodiment and the material (and messy) physicality of sex play? How do desires, identities, behaviours and practices interplay in sexual expressions in contemporary life? What challenging questions do we face in researching and theorising sexuality in the 21st Century?«

How have former “sexual outlaws” challenged their exclusion and gained the status of full citizens?
