Abstract: »Rape myths, which are present at both the individual and institutional/societal levels, are one way in which sexual violence has been sustained and justified throughout history. In light of an increasing accumulation of rape myth research across a variety of disciplines, this paper proposes to use a feminist lens to provide an overview of the historical origins of rape myths, to document the current manifestations of these myths in American society, and to summarize the current body of research literature. We focus on the history of several specific rape myths (i.e., “husbands cannot rape their wives,” “women enjoy rape,” “women ask to be raped,” and “women lie about being raped”) and how these particular myths permeate current legal, religious, and media institutions (despite their falsehood). The paper concludes with suggestions for further research and describes how existing evidence could be used to aid in eradicating rape myths at both the individual and institutional levels.« [Source: Sex Roles.]

Abstract: »The Edwards et al. (2011) paper is an important review of several rape myths that are prevalent in American culture. When discussing religion, Edwards et al. (2011) present a rather thorough review of the presence of such rape myths in Christianity but lack a discussion of rape myths in other religions. Given the profound influence of religion on culture, notably the treatment of women, it is important to go beyond Christianity in a discussion of rape myths. Although there is much attention given to the treatment of women in Islam, the current paper will address religions that often receive less attention as well. Abstract: »Rape affects one in seven women nationwide. Historically, most rape victims do not report rape to law enforcement. Research is needed to identify barriers to reporting and correlates of reporting to guide policy recommendations that address such barriers. We investigated the prevalence of reporting rape among a national sample of women (N = 3,001) interviewed in 2006. The study also examined predictors of reporting as well as barriers to reporting, concerns about reporting, and women’s experiences with the reporting process. Results demonstrated that the overall prevalence of reporting (15.8%) has not significantly increased since the 1990s. Differences were found between rape types, with rapes involving drug or alcohol incapacitation or facilitation being less likely to be reported than forcible rapes. Several predictors of reporting emerged in multivariable analyses. Implications for public health and public policy are discussed.« [Source: Journal of Interpersonal Violence.]

Notwithstanding the large number of national studies on particular aspects of prostitution (e.g. regulation, attitudes or labour market), no international comparison over a significant span of time has been attempted. This project attempts to achieve a comprehensive overview on prostitution from a global labour history perspective. It studies prostitution as a societal phenomenon as well as a form of labour, and focuses, therefore, on prostitutes’ working/living conditions and work culture.

The project follows a research model of earlier comparative projects conducted by the International Institute of Social History on the history of dock and textile workers. In the first phase of the project we seek to collect urban studies on the history of prostitution in different countries for the period between 1600 to the present. To facilitate international comparisons the authors of these urban overviews will be requested to respond to the topics/questions that are listed in a framework document (...). In the second phase of the project, and based upon the collection of urban overviews, a number of authors will be invited to write thematic comparative papers on prostitution with relation to migration, regulation, war/army building, colonisation, ethnicity, labour market and living conditions, influence of male working environments such as ports and army camps, socio-demographic profiling of prostitutes, prostitutes' activism and (national and international) organisation, and societal views on (female) prostitution and masculinity. These will be discussed at a conference, which will take place in Amsterdam/The Hague, on 14-16 February 2013.«

Abstract: »Some critics have argued that Middleton and Rowley’s play The Changeling depicts a rape. This article engages that argument by re-reading the play, first in relation to Janet Halley’s proposal that we “take a break” from the feminist project of “carrying a brief for” the feminine; and second in relation to recent historical research that deepens our understanding of the available ways of describing and assessing sexual coercion in seventeenth-century England. Placing particular emphasis on Beatrice-Joanna’s strategic, even exploitative, self-assertions, this article argues that the play does not depict rape as defined by statutes. Yet, as this article shows, the play participates in the history of sexual coercion and consent nonetheless. This is a history that motivates feminism. It is also a history from which we cannot take a break, however much we might wish to do so. Abstract: »Tunisian filmmaker Moufida Tlatli’s 1994 Arabic-language feature film, The Silences of the Palace, stages the traumatic situation of female servants in the household of Tunisian princes in the period before and after Tunisian independence from France in 1956. The film focuses on the ways in which female gender and sexuality are lived in a traumatic mode in the palace. Issues of gender, social class, and colonization intersect in the film, which centers on the relationship between a teenage daughter whose father is unknown, Alia, and her mother, the servant Khedija, who are both struggling with issues of sexual abuse. The film highlights the following aspects of gender and sexual trauma: flashbacks; endemic sexual abuse that is widespread and repeated over generations; the transgenerational transmission of trauma due to secrets and silences around sexuality and sexual abuse; resulting physical symptoms (such as chronic migraines, fainting, dissociation, neurasthenia and aphasia); the lack of avenues of escape; and finally, paths to possible healing (such as music and singing and, eventually, national independence). Far from representing an individualized situation, the film portrays Alia as embodying the entire country. This national allegory indicates that if Tunisia gained its independence, Tunisian women’s liberation is still to come since Alia’s life has repeated her mother’s patterns. The film thus seeks to make a feminist intervention into contemporary Tunisian politics and culture. At the end of the film, Alia decides to keep her illegitimate child against her boyfriend’s wishes and to call her Khedija, after her own mother. This open ending leaves the audience wondering whether little Khedija, who is also lacking a legal father, will repeat her mother’s and grandmother’s patterns. The film makes it clear that the answer lays in the future gender politics of the Tunisian nation, which Tlatli hopes to inflect for the better.« [Source: South Central review.]

Abstract: »When the Catholic priest William Hogan was charged with the attempted rape and assault of parishioner Mary Connell in 1821, the ensuing trial fed a debate about gender and religion in the early national era. Fears about gender disruption had already been at the heart of the so-called Hogan Schism. St. Mary’s Church in Philadelphia, like many other Catholic and Protestant congregations, felt the market strains of the Second Great Awakening, as followers pushed for more authority in their churches. Hogan had accommodated this desire, crafting a republican message and charismatic persona that appealed to male and female congregants alike. In doing so, he inflamed a long standing fight for power between the church hierarchy and elected trustees. As competing churchmen fought for adherents they found that women’s efforts on their behalf were central to their struggle. Hogan would resent the bishop’s seeming deployment of a female agent to bring him down. Yet Hogan himself had relied on this same woman, Mary Connell, to advance his cause. In addition, Hogan, a noted dandy, saw his very manhood interrogated from several quarters amidst these disputes. His seeming charm over female parishioners opened difficult questions about the nature of masculinity within a church that demanded celibacy of its clergy. In the long term, the schism and trial encouraged damaging criticism of Catholicism that would inform antebellum strains of nativism. Hogan himself would exploit this potential by portraying women as one of the primary victims of the unchecked power vested in priests. In both literal and metaphorical fashion, the Hogan Schism proved an “unmanly” dispute.« [Source: Journal of the early republic.]

Abstract: »Rampant sexual violence is one of the most horrendous human rights abuses taking place within Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) armed conflict. The UN has called these abuses “strategic” and a “weapon of war.” Both labels carry specific implications within the human rights discourse. However, there is a lack of structured data exploring these concepts in the context of the DRC. To address this empirical gap, twenty-five rape survivors were interviewed. Abstract: »The systematic rape of women has been a regular feature of war, and in today’s civil conflicts, rape is a systematic and brutal weapon used by armed groups against civilian populations. Though rape has occurred in mass and systematic forms previously, it was not as primary a weapon as it is in contemporary conflicts. Civil conflict has become the primary form of warfare around the world, employing smaller arms and less conventional tactics than traditional interstate wars. It is in this context that rape has become a central feature of contemporary war.
The aim of this article is to understand firstly the function of rape in contemporary conflict and then explain the wider systemic factors that construct sexual violence as an effective and strategic weapon of war. This article argues that the extreme forms of sexual violence being used in contemporary conflicts are a result of the nature and context of these conflicts. Using the Democratic Republic of Congo as a case study, this article argues that the extreme levels of sexual violence being witnessed in this conflict are a direct outcome of the changed nature of conflict, which is itself a consequence of processes of international political and economic globalization.« [Source: African conflict & peacebuilding review.]

Abstract: »This paper examines Livy’s depiction of prominent women as exempla in book 1 of his history. It seems that the ideal public role of these women is to support the efforts of their men to make the Roman state strong and stable—a role which appears to be an elaboration of women’s efforts with respect to their families. It is clear, however, that Livy complicates each exemplum and that the women generally fall short in this role, so that the overall picture is one of inherent instability, in which men must be wary of the influence of prominent women.« [Source: Classical world.]

Abstract: »Reanimating the 1980s critical discussion about how rhetoric in Shakespeare’s The Rape of Lucrece effects and affects the poem’s plot, this essay takes the ekphrastic scene at the center of the poem, in which Lucrece attempts to access a true Sinon hidden behind the painting’s canvas, to demonstrate how visual rhetoric motivates Tarquin’s rape of Lucrece and Lucrece’s suicide. In these violent acts, Tarquin and Lucrece attempt to surpass obfuscating representations and access unmediated truth, but discover that such truth is not obfuscated, but rather constituted, by visual metaphor. Shakespeare’s characters respond to this revelation by resurrecting visual metaphor, thereby carrying rhetorically inspired violence into Roman history.« [Source: SEL.]

Description: »The story of Africa in the world is in some ways a history of crime: from the Atlantic slave trade to the Nigerian “419” email scam, violence and illegality have often been the means by which the continent is inscribed in the Western imagination. On a more local level, crime has also served as the medium through which Africa and its peoples have negotiated engagement with globalization. Besides the obvious movement of illicit goods onto the global market, this is evident in the intricate international networks for smuggling people across the Sahara; in the prostitution rings that link parts of Africa to parts of Europe; and in the poaching syndicates driven by Asian demand for exotica such as rhino horn. The problematic role of law and/or its absence has long been the focal point of historical and social scientific work on Africa, though not without controversy over the line between voyeurism and observation.
Increasingly, fiction writers and literary scholars have also got in on the act. In South Africa, authors such as Deon Meyer and Margie Orford have topped the best-seller lists with their crime fiction, and the genre has gathered steam across the continent. What explains this development? What, if any, is the connection between the boom in writing about crime, and the problem of crime as it is experienced day to day? Finally, how can we both acknowledge crime’s dominant place in African narratives (and narratives about Africa), and question the limitations of this negative paradigm?«

Description: »Nach den jüngst bekannt gewordenen Missbrauchsfällen in Schulen und kirchlichen Einrichtungen ist ein ausgeprägter Forschungsbedarf im Bereich des sexuellen Kindesmissbrauchs erkennbar geworden. Da die bisher einzige und letzte deutsche Repräsentativbefragung, die vom KFN im Jahre 1992 durchgeführt wurde, schon 18 Jahre alt ist und in der Bundesrepublik gegenwärtig keine aktuellen, repräsentativen und wissenschaftlich gesicherten Erkenntnisse zur Thematik des sexuellen Missbrauchs von Kindern vorliegen, wird nun vom KFN eine Wiederholung und Erweiterung der Studie von 1992 durchgeführt. Die ersten 5 Gewalterfahrungen bzw. Themenbereiche waren bereits in der KFN-Untersuchung des Jahres 1992 Gegenstand der Befragung, so dass längsschnittliche Vergleiche, etwa wie sich die Häufigkeit und die Schwere sexuellen Missbrauchs und verschiedener Formen familiärer Gewalt im Laufe der vergangenen 18 Jahre verändert haben und welche Risikokonstellationen (nach wie vor) bestehen, möglich sind.«

Abstract: »Abstract: This paper draws attention to the obligation and opportunity to respond to the mental health impacts of collective sexual violence (CSV) among genocide-rape survivors in post-genocide Rwanda. Qualitative data gathered from CSV survivors who were members of Rwandan women's genocide survivor associations are presented to illustrate how they strive to overcome adversity while seeking access to quality mental health care and using informal community mental health services. The results reveal that a system of high quality, holistic health and mental health care is yet needed to meet Rwandan CSV survivors' complex and serious health and mental health needs. Given that a rural health system, modelled on community-based, comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment, is currently being implemented in Rwanda, we recommend enhancements to this model that would contribute to meeting the mental health care needs of CSV survivors while benefiting the health and mental health system as a whole within Rwanda.« [Source: Global Public Health.]

Abstract: »This study examined posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PSS) as a mediator of the association between military sexual trauma and post-deployment physical health. Relationships were examined in a sample of 83 female veterans of the first Gulf War (1990–1991) approximately 10 years post-deployment. Participants reported on the frequency of sexual harassment and sexual assault experienced during deployment. Physical health was measured using participants' self-reports of pre-deployment and post-deployment symptoms within 7 body systems. Sexual harassment exposure was not found to be associated with PSS-mediated associations with physical health symptoms. However, sexual assault during deployment was found to be associated with PSS and 4 of the 7 health symptom clusters assessed: gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, and neurological symptoms. Furthermore, PSS was found to be a significant mediator of the sexual assault–physical health relationship in each of these domains, with the indirect path accounting for 74% to 100% of the relationship. The findings from the current study indicate that sexual assault has detrimental associations with physical health and that PSS plays a primary role in that relationship.« [Source: Journal of Trauma & Dissociation.]

Abstract: »Military sexual trauma (MST) has historically been associated with female service members, but it is also experienced by male service members. This article reviews reported prevalence and incidence rates of men's MST in 29 studies. Sources for these studies included the Department of Defense, the U.S. military service academies, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is significant variability in reported rates of men's MST. Averaging across studies covering the past 30 years, we found that MST is reported by approximately 0.09% of male service members each year, with a range of 0.02% to 6%. MST is reported by 1.1% of male service members over the course of their military careers, with a range of 0.03% to 12.4%. Determining prevalence and incidence rates for both men's and women's MST is fraught with limitations, including (a) cross-study variations in sample, method, definitions, and assessment and (b) barriers to reporting MST. Abstract: »This article presents an evolutionary framework for understanding the sexual assault of women in the military. We specify the evolutionary underpinnings of tensions among heterosexual males, among heterosexual females, and between males and females and discuss how these tensions have played out in the strongly gendered context of warrior culture. In the absence of cultural interventions that take into account deep-seated conceptions of women in the military as unwelcome intruders, sexual resources for military men, or both, military women operate in an environment in which sexual assault may be deployed to enact and defend traditional military structures. We discuss how unit norms are likely to affect the choice of strategies by men and by women and how the resulting behaviorsincluding celibacy, consensual sex, and sexual assaultshould affect horizontal and vertical unit cohesion. Description: »Since the 1990s, sexual violence in conflict zones has received much media attention. In large part as a result of grassroots feminist organizing in the 1970s and 1980s, mass rapes in the wars in the former Yugoslavia and during the Rwandan genocide received widespread coverage, and international organizations—from courts to NGOs to the UN—have engaged in systematic efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and to ameliorate the effects of wartime sexual violence.
Yet many millennia of conflict preceded these developments, and we know little about the longer-term history of conflict-based sexual violence. Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones helps to fill in the historical gaps. It provides insight into subjects that are of deep concern to the human rights community, such as the aftermath of conflict-based sexual violence, legal strategies for prosecuting it, the economic functions of sexual violence, and the ways perceived religious or racial difference can create or aggravate settings of sexual danger.
Essays in the volume span a broad geographic, chronological, and thematic scope, touching on the ancient world, medieval Europe, the American Revolutionary War, precolonial and colonial Africa, Muslim Central Asia, the two world wars, and the Bangladeshi War of Independence. By considering a wide variety of cases, the contributors analyze the factors making sexual violence in conflict zones more or less likely and the resulting trauma more or less devastating. Description: »With the present call for papers, we do not have in mind a diagnosis of the forms of violence as they are traditionally thought of and represented in literature, images, art and the different cultural practices of Latin America. The aim behind this undertaking is to gather together research developed across the areas of comparative literature and literary theory, which participates in strategies of ethical and political reflection to think about violence and using violence as a starting point, in the different Latin American cultural, historical and epistemological expressions. Therefore, we do not wish to limit our invitation to research on the study of urban violence, but do favour the expansion of theoretical reflection and cultural representations of violence, so that the meanings and devices through which the narrations and dissidences of Latin American identity fiction have been constructed can be identified.
In this sense, we propose research that should reflect, among other options, on the relations between:
