Abstract: »This article explores the way in which Lu Chuan's Nanjing! Nanjing!/City of Life and Death (2009) breaks away from the previous mode of representation of the Nanjing Massacre that foregrounds the burden of proof and the discourse of victimization, and seeks instead to recreate the representation of this historical event through a decentred and multi-perspective mode of narrative that destabilizes the boundary between heroism and victimization and the distinction between the perpetrators and victims. This film places this historical conflict in the global context of warfare and atrocities and examines the relationship between human nature and war and the impacts of war on the human psyche. It is a `film as history', produced not just to remember the past but rather reconstruct the past, and it is also a film that confronts history and the representation of history in film.« [Source: Journal of Chinese Cinemas]
